KPMG continues its support of the Ocean Literacy Programme, which combines many different educational topics, which focus on the role of the ocean and its impacts on everyday lives.
The Ocean Literacy Programme is a long-term project, which KPMG has been supporting for four years. The next phase of the Ocean Literacy Programme is currently being launched within government schools, offering a competition (with supporting teaching materials) and the opportunity to win a class trip to the Little Cayman Research Centre. The schools must provide a visual and written class piece, describing humans’ interconnection with the ocean. Judging will take place on the 22 May, in association with the Department of Tourism, which have supported this fantastic competition.
The feedback from schools is overwhelmingly in support of developing Ocean Literacy where possible and the support for building on the original teacher training undertaken on 2009 is extremely positive. KPMG have provided the backbone to this worthwhile project, providing multi-year support that is integral to the programme and it’s continuing development.

Mixed fortunes for rugby young and old

Lleyton James breaks through the Biscayne defence supported by Kadar Afflick.

Cayman Rugby’s Youth and Oldies scene took to the South Sound rugby pitch on 28 April with the visit of Key Biscayne Rugby Club “Rugby Rats” to the Cayman Islands.
The Cayman U13 squad previously visited Key Biscayne in January and narrowly lost that match 29-27. Understandably, Key Biscayne’s return visit was eagerly anticipated by the Cayman players. The spoils were shared in the warm up games on the Saturday, with Cayman winning the first game and Key Biscayne winning the second game. The stand-out players were Lleyton James, Dylan Bostock and Devin Mourao, but the whole squad adapted well to playing sevens (seven-a-side as opposed to 13-a-side) on a full pitch. The dryer conditions promised a fast-flowing game on Sunday and so it proved, with Key Biscayne powering into an early lead straight from the kick off. Cayman hit straight back through strong running from James, Bostock and Josh Bolland. An opportunistic try by Aiden Clemens from a tap penalty saw Cayman take the lead but credit to Key Biscayne who stuck to their task and did not let Cayman run away with the game. Poor tackling from Cayman close to their line let Key Biscayne back into the game with a soft try.

ECLAC estimates that in 2012, the FDI flows to Latin America and the Caribbean will maintain high levels.

SANTIAGO, Chile – A report issued last Thursday by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile shows that the Caribbean and Latin America received US $153.448 billion from foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2011, which represents 10 per cent of the total global flows.
The report entitled “Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2011” stated that this is about the largest amount of FDI received by the region to date.
The largest amount of FDI in the region flowed into the Dominican Republic, where the FDI increased in 2011 to US $2.37 billion from $1.89 billion in 2010.
St Kitts and Nevis recorded an increase in foreign direct investment from US$122 million to $142 million, and St Vincent & the Grenadines saw an increase from $103 million to $135 million.
Antigua & Barbuda, however, did not record the significant growth that the report reflects. In 2010, the foreign direct investment recorded for the country was US $101 million, whereas in 2011, the figure fell to $64 million.
